U.S. Marines get their own dose of Spanish Bulls

Running with the Bulls in Pamplona is off limits for active-duty members of the military. This is due to the huge investment in training the government has made in each soldier – they’re not allowed to put that investment at risk just for fun.

However, the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crises Response Africa group gets daily lessons in maneuvering around Spanish bulls and heifers at their training base in the southern coastal city of Barbate, Spain. Some of the land on the military base is leased out to farmers, who graze their herds in the surrounding fields.

Fortunately, the task force has Sgt. Stephen Michaels, who grew up on a cattle farm. He coaches his fellow Marines on how to handle the bovine’s walking up to your tent. “They will walk right up to our sleeping bags and check us out. They’re very curious,” Michaels said.
