Pamplona Neighborhoods
The historic capital of Navarra has a number of diverse neighborhoods, each with their own ambience and character. From gothic cathedrals and medieval landmarks to modern high rises, Pamplona is a city of both deep-rooted traditions and modern innovation. These are some of the best locations in which to experience the sights, sounds and excitement of the San Fermin Festival.
Casco Viejo
Casco Viejo, or Old Town, is home to the unabashed revelry of the San Fermin Festival. The Old Quarter is brimming with winding cobbled roads, gorgeous architecture and many of Pamplona’s key tourist attractions including the Plaza de Castillo, where concerts and parties are staged during the 9-day fiesta. This highly walkable neighborhood is framed by the beautiful Pamplona city walls, built as a strategic defense between the 16th and 18th centuries. Beyond its historic landmarks and contemporary museums, Casco Viejo boasts incredible shopping, dining and nightlife. The area’s best bars and eateries can be found in Old Town’s “seven streets” of Somera, Carnicería Vieja, Artecalle, Belosticalle, Tendería, Barrencalle and Barrencalle Barrena. Be sure to visit the iconic Café Iruna – established in 1888 — a beloved hang-out of Ernest Hemingway.
Primer Ensanche
Primer Ensanche is home to the famed Plaza del Toros, where the bulls make their frenzied dash during the San Fermin Festival. This district was created from 1890-1900 to accommodate Casco Viejo’s burgeoning population. Primer Ensanche, which means the “first expansion,” is located outside of the Old Citadel southeast of Casco Viejo and features some of Pamplona’s most coveted real estate. Here, visitors will discover beautiful residences, upscale shops, pubs and the emblematic Monumento al Encierro—an impressive life-size sculpture that captures the drama of the bull run.
San Juan
Created in the mid 1960’s, the Pamplona neighborhood of San Juan is situated south of the Citadel, about five minutes from Casco Viejo. This cosmopolitan suburb is characterized by tony residential developments, plazas, pretty churches and government establishments like the Palace of Justice. One of the most notable attractions in San Juan is the Japanese-inspired Yamaguchi Park, which spans more than 85,000 square meters. Filled with ornamental ponds, bridges and oriental plant species, the park is symbolic of Pamplona’s twin city of Yamaguchi, Japan.
